![]() ![]() ![]() Mini Windows Xp Portable Windows Xp that runs from CD/USB/Ram Drive to repair/recover dead windows operating system. Hirens Boot CD has miniXP on it, that might do it for you? #MINI WINDOWS XP LIVE CD ISO INSTALL#I wasted a good bit of time trying to accomplish this a few months ago and then finally just did the whole install another SATA drive, install Windows from scratch, install BIOS update then swap the drives back.īut 1: I needed that SATA drive and it was only a temp usage and no longer free to use again so I'd have to buy another SATA drive or scrounge up another one and 2: we have a bunch of these Optiplex 990's in my department and a bunch of us are faced with the same issue so having a USB bootable live Windows option would be really handy for a bunch of use to share.Īll that said, has anyone found a easy way to take either a large USB flash drive (have a 32GB one) or a USB external HDD (have a 80GB one) and make it live bootable Windows? Sure, I can take another SATA drive, disconnect the existing drive, install Windows on it, then finally be able to do the BIOS update I need but its a real pain doing all that and I would LOVE to just build a bootable live Windows drive that'll work via USB and can be modified (written to) while being used so I can install Dells damn BIOS updater. I even called Dell support a few months ago when I encountered this the 1st time and they confirmed there is no other way to update the BIOS other than from within Windows. ![]() Problem is, I have this Dell Optiplex 990 I run my XenServer lab on for testing around and playing with issues and Dell ONLY offers BIOS updates for this system from within Windows. It's easy enough to make a Linux "live" bootable USB flash drive or even an external USB hard drive that's bootable but it would appear that doing the same with Windows is not as simple. ![]()
